Updates to the Yukon Nominee Program for 2025
The Government of Yukon has announced significant changes to the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) for 2025, aimed at streamlining the application process and managing the unprecedented demand experienced in the previous year. The program will reopen for applications on January 29, 2025, at 9 am Yukon Standard Time, introducing a structured, intake-based approach to better accommodate both employers and foreign nationals.
New Intake System
Starting in 2025, the YNP will implement a quarterly intake system. This new model allows for a maximum of 125 completed applications to be accepted during each intake period. Once this cap is reached, no further applications will be accepted until the next scheduled intake. This change is designed to prevent overwhelming the system, as was seen in 2024 when applications far exceeded available nominations from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
The introduction of structured intakes is a response to the unprecedented demand for the YNP in 2024, which necessitated a temporary pause on applications from employers in Whitehorse. By spreading out application submissions throughout the year, both employers and applicants will have more flexibility and predictability in their planning.
Anticipated Intakes
The YNP plans to conduct these intakes on a quarterly basis, although the exact number of intakes and the total number of applications that can be accepted will depend on the allocations received from IRCC. The Yukon government has requested an increase in its allocation for 2025, which will be confirmed in late February.
Daily updates will be provided during open intakes to inform applicants of the number of applications received, ensuring transparency throughout the process.
Carried Over Applications
In addition to new applications, approximately 150 applications from 2024 that were not processed will carry over into 2025. Any approved applications from this carryover will count toward Yukon’s total allocations for that year. This means that while 125 new applications can be submitted in January, the actual number of additional applications that can be accepted later in the year may be affected by these carryover approvals.
Impact on Employers and Foreign Nationals
The revamped YNP aims to address critical labour shortages within Yukon by providing an organized pathway for skilled workers and employers. The program is particularly focused on sectors experiencing labour shortages and intends to prioritize applicants who can fill these roles effectively.
Potential applicants are encouraged to start preparing their documentation early and to build connections with employers in Yukon through job boards and recruitment events. Regular visits to the official Yukon immigration website will also help applicants stay updated on any changes or additional information regarding eligibility and submission guidelines.
The updates to the Yukon Nominee Program represent a strategic shift towards a more organized immigration process that aligns with federal immigration goals while supporting local economic growth. As Yukon prepares for its first intake of 2025, both employers and foreign nationals should take advantage of this opportunity to navigate their immigration pathways effectively.
