International Experience Canada (IEC)

International Experience Canada (IEC)

International Experience Canada (IEC) offers youth the chance to travel and work in Canada for up to two years through three distinct programs:

Working Holiday

Ideal for individuals without a job offer who wish to work for multiple employers across different locations in Canada while earning money to fund their travels. Participants receive an open work permit allowing them to work for almost any Canadian employer, with exceptions for certain types of work.

Young Professionals

Designed for those with a job offer in Canada that contributes to their professional development. Participants work exclusively for one employer in a specific location under an employer-specific work permit. Jobs must align with specific criteria related to professional growth and may require educational credentials.

International Co-op (Internship)

Geared towards students registered at a post-secondary institution who secure a work placement or internship in Canada necessary for their studies. Like the Young Professionals category, this program requires an employer-specific work permit tied to the internship’s relevance to their field of study.

Applying through Recognized Organizations (ROs)

Participants can apply directly to IEC or seek assistance from Recognized Organizations (ROs), Canadian-based entities that facilitate international youth work and travel experiences. ROs offer various services such as job placement, travel planning, and cultural training, for which they may charge fees. Using an RO can provide participants with additional opportunities and support throughout their stay in Canada.

IEC is open to citizens from partner countries and territories. ROs extend their services to eligible individuals, enhancing their experience with tailored support before and during their time in Canada. Participants may choose to utilize RO services for job placement, financial setup, travel arrangements, health insurance, and emergency assistance.

Several ROs, including AIESEC Canada, GO International, IAESTE, and others, cater to specific demographics and offer specialized programs under the IEC framework. Each RO has distinct eligibility criteria and services, enabling participants to select the organization that best aligns with their goals and needs.

Participants under IEC are safeguarded by Canadian labor laws, ensuring fair treatment and workplace safety. Employers must adhere to minimum wage laws, maintain a safe working environment, and are prohibited from withholding passports or work permits from employees. Violations of these rights can be reported for appropriate action.

IEC not only fosters cultural exchange but also enhances professional development through tailored work and travel opportunities in Canada. Whether participants opt for independent application or seek assistance from ROs, the program encourages youth to explore Canada while gaining valuable work experience and cultural insights.
