On July 4, 2024, the Ministerial Instructions for invitations to apply for permanent residence under the Express Entry system, round #300, were issued. This round, which targeted Trade occupations (Version 1), resulted in the issuing of 1,800 invitations. To be invited to apply, candidates needed to be ranked 1,800 or above. The round was held at 13:30:48 UTC on the indicated day. The lowest-ranked applicant invited had a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 436. In situations where several candidates got the lowest score, the tie-breaking rule was used based on the date and time their Express Entry profiles were submitted, with the deadline set for July 16, 2023, at 15:44:59 UTC.
The July 4, 2024, Express Entry draw marked the first Trades Occupations draw of the year and set a new record by issuing 1,800 invitations, surpassing the previous high of 1,500 invitations in August 2023. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off score for this draw was 436 points, higher than the 425-point cut-off in the December 2023 Trades Occupations draw. This increase in the CRS cut-off score indicates heightened competition within the Trades Occupations pool. In summary, the recent draw not only focused on trade occupations but also highlighted the rising competitiveness by setting new records in both the number of invitations and the CRS cut-off score as shown in the table below.
Below is a chart show the increase in number of invitations issued in 2023/2024
Several key factors have contributed to the rise in Invitations to Apply (ITAs) issued for the trade occupation draws. Firstly, there is a higher demand for skilled trade workers in Canada due to labor shortages, driving an increased need for these occupations through the Express Entry system. Additionally, the 2024 immigration levels plan has allocated more spaces for the Express Entry system overall, enabling Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to issue more ITAs across various categories, including trades. Furthermore, IRCC has been emphasizing category-based Express Entry draws, targeting specific occupations like trades as part of its strategy to address labor market needs. In summary, the significant increase in invitations issued during the July 2024 Express Entry draw for trade occupations reflects Canada’s efforts to address labor demands through the Express Entry immigration pathway. According to an internal IRCC memo obtained earlier this year, trade occupations will account for 5% of all category-based draws in 2024, suggesting that more such draws can be expected throughout the year.
