Express Entry: CEC & PNP 148th Draw held on May 15, 2020

Express Entry: CEC & PNP 148th Draw held on May 15, 2020

1) Express Entry Program-specific draw under CEC (Canadian Experience Class Draw)

CEC is a category reflecting how Canada recognizes the best of the skilled workers/students who are already working in Canada for at least one year in the last three years. Since the start of this pandemic, the Government of Canada has conducted draws giving all candidates with Canadian Experience the opportunity to get a PR in Canada.

A total number of 3,371 invitations were issued to Canadian Experience Class candidates on May 15, 2020. The minimum CRS score dropped to 447. Candidates who submitted their profile before 10:01:06 UTC, December 23, 2019, were issued Invitation To Apply (ITAs).

May 15, 2020, specific Express Entry draw has seen the lowest CRS requirement for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) since January 2019. It may be recalled that Express Entry candidates under the CEC category with a CRS score of 452 were issued ITAs in the May 01, 2020 draw.

2) Express Entry Program-specific draw under PNP (Provincial Nomination Program Draw)

In the second round of invitation, 529 PNP candidates from the Express Entry pool were invited to apply for Permanent Residency. The Minimum CRS score for these PNP candidates was 718. It should be pointed out that Express Entry candidates with a provincial nomination receive an additional 600 points toward their CRS score, which explains the higher cut-off score. The frequency of Express Entry draws has increased from the time when Canada announced its travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The May 15, 2020 draw brings the total ITAs issued so far this year to 38,200. It is noteworthy to mention that IRCC has actually conducted 10 draws since March 18, 2020, of which five targeted candidates with provincial nomination while the other five targeted candidates who had a Canadian Experience. The IRCC invited 19,500 Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residence.

The graph below shows a comparison of ITAs issued to date and annual target admissions since the Express Entry system was launched in 2015:

2020 has started off as a great year for Express Entry candidates despite the Coronavirus crisis. Since then IRCC has remained operational allowing candidates to submit their profile.

It could be noted that since travel restrictions were introduced on March 18, IRCC has held program-specific draws focusing specifically on PNP and Canadian Experience Class applicants. One possible reason for this could be because candidates in the two categories are more likely to already be in Canada compared to those coming through other Express Entry-linked programs will not be affected by travel restrictions.
